NASCAR returns to a short track this weekend at Martinsville Speedway, nicknamed “The Paperclip” for its oblong shape. After a Truck Series race won by William Byron on Thursday at the half-mile Virginia venue, the Xfinity Series races Friday (7:30 pm on FS1, MRN, SiriumXM) followed by the Cup Series on Saturday (7:30 pm on FS1 , MNR, SiriusXM).
The Xfinity race will feature Ty Gibbs on the pole after the No. 54 Toyota driver qualified with the fastest lap of 95.985 mph on Thursday. Gibbs earned his third consecutive pole and is racing for his fourth win in the series this year.
Also running in the Xfinity race is fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. who’s making his sole start in the series this season. The former full-time Cup driver and NASCAR on NBC analyst is slated to start 30th after qualifying. He’s driving the No. 88 Chevrolet for his JR Motorsports team.
The Cup Series holds practice and qualifying prior to the Xfinity race on Friday. Qualifying will be single-vehicle and feature two rounds. Ryan Blaney, who sits tied in first with Chase Elliott in points standings, has won three pole starts this year, but he’s still searching for his first race win.
